Kwame Nkrumah, Bandung, and the Challenges of Postcolonial State-Building: Ghana as a Case Study, Indonesia as a Comparative Lens

Before gaining independence from Britain in 1957, Ghana—then known as the Gold Coast—had already taken part in the historic Asian-African Conference, also known as the Bandung Conference. As two nations that experienced colonialism, Ghana and Indonesia share a common past. In this public lecture, Pietro Fasola from the University of Florence will explore the parallels and contrasts in postcolonial development between the two countries. The Development of Historiographical Thought: Writing Indonesian History in the 20th Century

To celebrate the launch of Hugo Klooster’s classic work—recently translated into Indonesian by @penerbit.selaklali after its original publication in 1985—the Department of History at UGM will host a book discussion. The event will feature two UGM History lecturers, Dr. Wildan Sena Utama and Uji Nugroho Winardi, MA, as discussants. Southeast Asian Studies: The View from Our End

To mark the beginning of the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, the Department of History at UGM will host a public lecture featuring Dr. Maria Serena Diokno, Director of the Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP) Foundation. The lecture will take place at the 7th Floor Auditorium, Soegondo Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM.

Intellectual Origins of the Postcolonial State: Southeast Asia 1945-c. 1965

The Department of History at UGM will once again hold a seminar. On this occasion, Yi Ning Chang, a PhD candidate from Harvard University, will present her dissertation on the ideas and imaginations of political elites in Southeast Asia regarding decolonization and the concept of the postcolonial state during the 1950s and 1960s. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Room 709, Soegondo Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM.

Oral History in Southeast Asia

The SEASREP Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of History at UGM, will organize a workshop on Oral History in Southeast Asia. The event will be held at the Multimedia Room, Margono Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, over three days from February 9–11, 2026. This workshop is primarily intended for master’s and doctoral students in the Department of History at UGM.
