About the Summer School
This summer school will bring important contributors and actors in the developing field of environmental history from abroad and within Indonesia, including academics from various countries and practitioners working in the field of environmental management, community-based environmental engagements and environmental NGOs. The summer school is also aimed to provide spaces for interactions, dialogue and co-operations between academics, environmental practitioners and communities – allowing for an organic and locally-sourced problematization in developing environmental history narrative.
While environmental history is global, the questions and solutions that it dealt with is always local. With that in mind, students at the summer school will be provided with theoretical and historical lessons in environmental history and theory. They will then engage with ‘environmental sites’ as method in determining local sources of problematization. This site-approach provides an interdisciplinary space from which various methodological tools can be applied, but also sites for dialogue and interaction between students, activists and the communities.
The development of environmental history is deeply entwined with the development of sustainable communities and sustainable civilizations. If the main question of the twentieth century was that of development, then the main question of the twenty-first century is on sustainability. Yet, we must approach this question with sensitivity and an understanding of the limitation and dangers inherent in knowledge. We believe that a site-based, historical approach provides better protection against the excesses such knowledge/power program, by positioning the discussion within communities and localities.
We invite students and activists/practitioners from all disciplines and communities to join the summer school and to develop environmental history together. Participants will get a certificate of participation and course transcript that can be transferred. The participants are welcome to publish the group project deliverables to the journal of Lembaran Sejarah.
